ANOTHER busy day at Leek with particular­ly good entries of dairy cattle for the monthly Pedigree sale and yet another full shed of butchers lambs and killing ewes with some very pleasing sale prices being achieved.

In the dairy section top price of the day was £2,340 for a newly calved pedigree heifer from A & B Weston of Litton with a pedigree Limousin stock bull from PM & L Harris, exchanging hands for £2,640.

Butchered lambs sold up to 240p/kg and a top headage price of £115 per head.

Pigs were also dearer on the week with top price per kg of 152 and £179.40.

Calves were again in good demand selling up to £390 for a British Blue bull from P F Gilman.

Barren cows achieved a top price of £1130 with clean cattle up to £1175.

BARREN COWS (33);

Selling time – 10:00am Auctioneer – Graham Watkins (07976 370894) Again these were sold per head this week with again some good quality prices being achieved seeing a top price of £1130 for a 73 month old Angus cow from Mr Alcock of Waterhouse­s with a British Blue cow from G Saxelby & Sons at £1020 with a Simmental from Rushton Spencer at £995 and a 41 month old Hereford from Hambleton Bros of Calton selling particular­ly well at £970.

An aged British Blue cow again from G Saxelby & Sons exchanged hands for £940 with the highest price Friesian being £880 from the same vendor.

A 61 month old Holstein from MA & WJ Joliffe of Marston sold for £840 with a 35 month old Hereford from EM & CP Naden of Cheddleton at £820 and a Blonde cow at 54 months of age from G Saxelby & Sons at £805 (twice).

Montbeliar­de cows from FA & TM Cotton sold up to £800 with other Holsteins at £785, £775 and £700.

Fleck V cows from GJ Curtis & Sons of Basford exchanged hands for £755.

The overall average achieved was £669 per head which compared well with the average last week which was £667.

CLEAN CATTLE;

Selling time – 10:45am approx. Auctioneer – Graham Watkins (07976 370894) Cattle were sold per head today due to a technical issue. Vendors were well satisfied with the prices achieved which saw a 28 month old South Devon heifer from Roy Green of Ashbank selling particular­ly well for £1175. A 28 month old Hereford heifer from Hambleton Bros of Calton at £1150 and a 27 month old British Blue heifer from R J Critchlow of Grindon at £1110. A 26 month old Simmental from the same vendor sold for £1040 with another 26 month old Simmental heifer from R Green of Ashbank at £1040 also and a 25 month old Simmental at £1030 from FW & RC Hodgkinson of Gawsworth.

A 13-month old Sussex heifer from Edward and Jackie Dale of Leek was well sold at £840.

Please note barren cows and clean cattle will be sold p/kg again next week.

DAIRIES (164);

Selling time – 11:30am Auctioneer­s – Meg Elliott (07967 007049) & Mark Elliott (07973 673092) Another exceptiona­lly busy day in the dairy shed at Leek saw 164 animals pass through the ring to top at £2340 with 11 passing the £2000 mark.

Milky heifers remain a fantastic trade with them time and time again sailing past the £1800 mark and often much much further.

Andrew Weston maintained his reputation for showing stylish heifers with a Fanatic daughter giving 32kg clinching the top spot of the day at £2340.

Phillip and Marilyn Critchlow, in addition to their large entry of bulling heifers, presented three beautiful fresh heifers, all of which passed £2000 to average £2113.

An outstandin­g cow shown by the Mellor family of Earl Sterndale caught the eye of many. By Cogent Bill and fresh with her second she was sold giving 45kg with the hammer eventually falling at £2300. They also had a third calver to £1980.

A beautiful Shorthorn second calver from Martin Tidmarsh reached £1870 with an Ayrshire second calver from P & L Harris to £1700.

The youngstock trade continues to hold no doubt helped by the superb quality shown by the Critchlow family of Cubley. Their group of 43 topped at £1110 with numerous passing the £1000 mark. The entire entry averaged £911.

A powerful pedigree Limousin stock bull from P and L Harris sold very well to reach £2640.

Macmillan Cake Stall – A big thank you to anybody that helped or donated on Tuesday. We managed to raise in excess of £600 for Macmillan Cancer support, which is absolutely fantastic.

PIGS (109);

Selling time – 9:15am Auctioneer – Graham Watkins (07976 370894) There were 109 pigs on offer with a particular­ly sharp trade and plenty of competitio­n for all lots.

Cutting pigs from J & B Fentem & Sons of Alsop in the Dale sold up to 146p/kg with others from the same vendor at 134p/kg.

Bacon pigs from JA & B Minshull of Buxton topped the market at 152p/kg.
