Following the report of a plan to redevelop the town, Cheadle mayor says he wants to get the best for residents
IAN PLANT
AS TOWN Mayor I have always worked towards one aim, the benefit of Cheadle.
It has always been my intention to fight for what is right for Cheadle, so why would I want to demolish both the leisure centre and hospital?
I and other district councillors were unaware of the report or the contents of the Cabinet meeting and only became aware when asked by the press.
I, like everyone, want to see regeneration in our town but done in the right way.
After receiving adverse comments – mainly via social media – it has made me more determined to address any issues surrounding this report and to make sure there is a consultation period taking place to take on board the views of the residents of the town.
The report which was done by Cushman and Wakefield – as I see it SMDC were only asking for Cabinet to approve the setting up of a Cheadle Town Centre Delivery Board and Stakeholder Panel, not to go through any options that Cushman and Wakefield had suggested.
This would be scrutinised along with any proposals from these two boards and any more proposals that came from these meetings.
We are still awaiting a visited from the Government Task Force to give us their observations but with Covid-19 we are still waiting for that and no date has been given yet.
So why don’t we wait and see what they can advise and bring both findings together along with our own?
Let us move forward and get the best for Cheadle whether it be for leisure, health or well-being and not forgetting infrastructure.
I for one will be doing my utmost for the town.
May I at this point thank all those councillors, family and friends who have assisted me in getting through these difficult times over recent days.
If anyone would like to contact myself personally, all details are on the Cheadle Town Council website.
