Parish seeks proof that road is ‘like a race track’

Councillors want speed enforcement along A52 into village

A PARISH council is hoping to gather evidence to support their case for speed enforcement on a busy Staffordshire Moorlands highway.

Kingsley Parish Council have agreed to ask Staffordshire County Council to complete speed monitoring on the A52 from the Kingsley Moor junction to the village’s 30mph entrance.

Speaking at last week’s meeting of the council, Councillor David Shields said: “A meeting has been held regarding the road from Cellarhead to Cheadle. It is accepted that more needs to be done, including more signage, more white lines and hedges trimmed.

“Now I request the council’s assistance to make a formal request for a reduction in the speed limit on the A52 from Kingsley Moor to Kingsley village. There needs to be reduction to 40 or 50mph near the houses and the junctions which are dangerous.

“I have tried to set up a community speed watch, but you can’t operate on a road which has a national speed limit like the Kingsley road from Kingsley Moor.”

Councillor Martyn Hordern said he fully supported the request.

He said: “The road from Kingsley Moor to Kingsley is like a race track. The same speed limit should go all the way along the road as people are going too fast.

“We should ask speed enforcement. for We

need community watch to come and get us the evidence.” Councillor David Fowler said Staffordshire County Council had let them down.

He said: “Enforcement on the A52 is dire. I support a reduction in the speed limit from Kingsley Moor to Kingsley. There are dangerous junctions and there are lorries coming out of an industrial site. We should now go through our County Councillor Mike Worthington.”

Councillor Ivor Lucas, left, stated that double white lines would help to make the road safer.

He said: “If the road from Kingsley Moor to Kingsley had double white lines all the way it would stop overtaking. We could also look at making it 50mph.”

Councillor John Steele said that the council should look at monitoring the speed first, then supporting no overtaking along with a reduction from 60 to 50mph.

He said: “Stopping overtaking is a good idea. Bad driving is causing the problem.”

County Councillor for the area, Councillor Mike Worthington was present at the meeting.

He said: “Speed is the biggest problem. Stopping overtaking is a good idea. I think we could get a 50mph limit, but I do not think that you would get a reduction to 40mph.

“Keep the pressure on to insist in getting some data to work on.”

Councillors agreed, in the first stage, to request data on the road for evidence before moving forward to the proposed steps outlined.
