SLIGHTLY less numbers about this Tuesday, but trade on fire in every section at Leek!

Hogget’s are in exceptiona­l demand, with the entry averaging a superb £128.90 per head and 300p/kg! If you have any to sell, get in touch with Rob. Top prices of 362p/kg and £164.80. Ewes also an unbelievab­le trade and selling to £166 to average £100/ head.

A shortage of barren cattle with prices easily up 10p/kg, if not more, on the week, selling to 165p/kg, to average 125p/kg or £842.12 overall. Black & white bulls sold to 177p/kg.

Dairies continuing to sell very well, with heifers to £2210 from the Phillips family and other heifers at £2180 and £2140. Next week is Pedigree week so look out for the catalogue this week, with a bumper entry forward.

Less pigs this week, but prices well up on the previous weeks, with bacon pigs to 148p/kg and cull sows to 95p/kg.

No shortage of calf buyers this week, but shortage of calves, leading to another tremendous trade for all qualities with the best bull calves to £370 and heifers to £285.

BARREN COWS (25);

What a trade!! Sadly a shortage on numbers, with buyers ready to secure numbers and trade brisk right through. Top price of 165p/

kg with numerous cattle 135p and above.

Black & whites topped at 165p/ kg for a 650kg Holstein from John Goldstraw, Waterhouse­s, with other Holsteins at 154p/kg for a 790kg cow from Brian Goodwin, Upper Hulme and a 620kg Holsteins at 148p/kg for Andrew Mills, Ratcliffe on Wreake.

Overall average of 125p/kg or £842.12.

Top headage price of £1216.60 for the 790kg Holstein from Brian Goodwin, Upper Hulme with Norwegian Reds to £1166.40 and Friesians to £1107 with Simmentals at £1092.

CLEAN CATTLE;

A small entry with two black & white bulls selling extremely well at 177p/kg for a 545kg Friesian and a 570kg Friesian at 175p/kg, both for J E Archer & Sons, Hilton.

DAIRIES (120);

Another big day in Leek Dairy Section saw 120 pass through the ring which included 40 Commercial Milkers, In-calf Heifers, Calves and a Herd Dispersal.

Trade proved to be just as strong as recent weeks with the Phillips family of Winkhill continuing there successful streak topping at £2210.

Close behind was Malcolm Trevor-jones of Oswestry with his Norwegian Red X heifer at £2180. He also had a second to £2140. Regular vendor Richard Lomas of

Calow saw his heifer make £2000.

Commercial In-calf heifers topped at £1430 from Chris Tams with a lovely run of Friesian type calves topping at £220 to average £203.

There was a good crowd in attendance for the herd dispersal on behalf of the Hall Brothers of Somerford Booth, Congleton which saw a top of £1950 for a fresh heifer with others to £1900 and £1850 to average out at £1146.

Another big entry for next weeks pedigree sale including a Special Entry of 29 Youngstock (3-14mths) from the Havendale Herd of Messrs Flower. Sires include Brekem, Piston, Secretaria­t, Bacardi & Beegees. Herd Av 12480kg x3, BVD, IBR & Lepto Vacc, Johnes monitored.

We also have a Special Entry of 16 Cows & Heifers In-milk & In-calf from the noted Shirewood Herd of Messrs Russell of Boston, Lincs, commencing their herd dispersal. Many superb pedigrees feature. The herd average is running at 8365kg 4.38%F 3.42%P cc154 with high herd health. 4 yearly TB area. Well worth a look.

An excellent trade this Tuesday, with a few less on offer, but prices well up on last week by £15 - £25 per head!

No lighter pigs forward this Tuesday. Bacon pigs topped at 148p/kg for a trio of 96kg pigs from David Goldstraw, who also sold another 3 at 136p/kg. PF & PD Parsons realised 145p/kg for a pair of 97kg pigs with 144p/kg for 89kg pigs from J & B Fentem, with Bernard Minshull selling a run at 144p/kg, 142p/kg, 140p/kg and 139p/kg.

Heavy pigs topped at 145p/ kg for a pair of 106kg pigs from Bernard Minshull, Buxton, who also sold a 109kg pig at 120p/ kg and the Fentem family selling 109kg and 106kg pigs at 111p/kg.

Sows were in a strong demand up to 95p/kg for a 280kg sow from PF & PD Parsons, with a 201kg sow at 85p/kg for Chris Hine and a 244kg sow at 81kg for JW Bailey.

A 218kg Cull boar realised 48p/ kg for G Longden, Bamford.

BUTCHERS HOGGET’S (453); An unbelievab­le trade, reaching heady heights of 262p/kg three times and £164.80 per head, with the whole entry, albeit a mixed bunch, averaging at £128.90 per head and SQQ of 301.96p/kg, overall 298.39p/kg.

If you have hoggs to sell, get them to Leek!! We need more numbers to keep up with the orders and demand we have to offer.

CULL SHEEP (154);

Same again in the ewes, an outstandin­g trade, averaging over £100/head, with prices up to £166, £145 and £136 for strong continenta­ls, with strong Mule types around £100. Now is the time to sell!

CALVES (66);

Buyers galore with the trade through the roof for each and every calf on offer. We could honestly have sold twice as many, if not more. If you have calves to sell, why not try a load at Leek. This is the season the buyers look for numbers and we can certainly handle them here!

16 Continenta­l Bulls av £266.18 Very low numbers but plenty of trade. 4 better bulls topped £340 to 3 different buyers with John Plant, Bradnop topping the day at £370 with a Blue. Medium bulls £250 - £300 with just a few less.

16 Bulls averaged £193 and topped at £332 for a smart Hereford from Trevor Swinson with Anugs’ at £312 for Steve Ryder who also had a heifer up to £235. (7 Heifers av £155).

All smaller calves today and generally selling £20 - £50.
