TEN pigeons were released from the grounds of a Moorlands Church on Saturday as part of a tribute to Prince Philip.

The pigeons were released by Leek Invitation Flying Club who took up a call from the The Royal Pigeon Racing Association to release ten birds, one for each decade of the Duke of Edinburgh’s life.

Pigeons were released in 65 town and cities across the UK.

The pigeons were released in Leek from within the grounds of St Edward’s Church.

The National Flying Club website said: “We give our condolences to HRM the Queen for the loss of Prince Phillip, her husband of over 73 years and this past weekend many members of the National Flying Club rallied to the call of the RPRA to simultaneously release 10 pigeons to commemorate the life of the Duke of Edinburgh, with each pigeon representing 10 years of his life.

“It was a moving tribute to him and a show of combined respect towards the Royal family for their continued support in our two premier National organisations, which has continued in Sandringham over four generations, long may it continue.”

Meanwhile a Moorlands Parish Council has pledged to plant 100 trees as a tribute to the Duke.

Endon with Stanley Parish Council will plant the trees as a mark of the Duke’s work as a conservationist.

The selection of native British trees will be planted on parish council land forming a wildlife corridor. Planting will take place in the appropriate Autumn planting season and a commemorative plaque will be installed.

Tributes have also been paid by shops in Getliffes Yard in Leek, where two pictures of the Duke have been placed.
