TWO women have spoken of their trauma after trying to release their dog after it was attacked.

The incident took place in Argles Road, Leek on Thursday, April 22.

Rose Chadwick was visiting her daughter’s home when a large dog came up to the front door of the property and attacked her daughter’s miniature dachshund.

The two women tried to release the dogs, but both suffered injuries which required hospital treatment.

Mrs Chadwick said: “I was visiting my daughter when this big dog attacked her miniature dachshund. It came right up to the front door.

“We both tried to release the dogs but we were both hurt and suffered puncture wounds. We had to go to the Haywood Hospital in Burslem because Leek hospital was closed.

“My daughter, Julianna Proctor, 46, had to have one finger dressed. It has now gone black. I suffered a puncture wound and swelling also to my fingers.

“We were put on antibiotics, but they could not give us a tetanus injection because we had just had our Covid-19 jab.

“This incident took place in my daughter’s own grounds. It went on for about five minutes until we managed to free the big dog.

“I am still suffering flashbacks as the incident was horrendous.

“Soon after we had freed the dogs someone came to take the big dog away until its owner came forward.

“We are both angry as a police statement said that no one was hurt in the incident, yet we had to have hospital treatment and still have to return for our tetanus injections.

“Our dog has suffered serious injuries and has had to undergo a three and a half hour operation. It might have to have another one. At the moment it has lots of stitches all over its body. We would like to thank the vets for their brilliant work.”

Julianna said she had never witnessed such an incident.

She said: “I would like to reiterate that this is not a dog on dog attack. My dog did not stand a chance because she’s so tiny and within seconds she was dragged out of my hallway.

“I’ve never witnessed such a gruesome situation.

“I’m very upset that I couldn’t help Minnie. Eventually when I did get Minnie I thought she was dead. Her eye was bulging and her little tongue was hanging out of her mouth. The vet didn’t expect her to last the night. She’s now recovering at home but still goes to the vet to check on her wounds.

“It’s upsetting reliving her ordeal, the images and the noise she was making. The trauma has affected family and friends, Minnie’s has a long way to go to recovery. She is a very lucky dog and I can’t thank all of the vets at Moorlands Veterinary Centre enough. Family, friends and neighbours have all been amazing.”

A spokesman for Staffordshire Police said: “Regarding the incident involving a dog attacking another dog on Argles Road, Leek, on April 22, the person who called to inform both ourselves and the council’s dog wardens team about the incident believed no people had been hurt in the incident.”
