Elvis has left the building - and is coming to Leek!

-

AN Elvis tribute act is to perform live in Leek.

The event is to be part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebration.

The act has been booked for Westwood Recreation Ground for the afternoon of Saturday, June 4.

Councillor Bill Cawley, deputy mayor of the town council said he thought of involving Elvis as a ‘thank you’ to the people of Leek who live close to the recreation ground as people emerge from the pandemic as well as an appreciation of Her Majesty the Queen in the 70th year of her reign.

The event will be a community run event involving a number of partners including councils and local schools as well as individuals who live in the area.

“One thing I was clear on”, said Councillor Cawley, “was that it was going to be an event that involved as many people as possible in the preparation and the commissioning.

“I alerted fellow councillors in Leek South and West so that it could be as broad an effort as possible with the aim of producing a truly memorable day for local residents.

“I would like the event to be 50s themed the recreation ground, after all, was pressed into service as a venue for a Coronation Day event involving actors in 1953. I have seen photos of a stage on the recreation ground with actors performing a tableau based on Elizabethan England.

“I would also like the event to be a genuine collective get together with neighbours who may have borne the brunt of isolation, able to come and enjoy what I hope is a bright summer day.

“The Elvis who will be appearing has played at Vegas so he is taking the opportunity to leave the building that is Caesar’s Palace and come to Leek

“I know that my Leek West colleague, Councillor Ben Emery, has mentioned the event prior to a council cabinet meeting in which additional monies were pledged for a community knees-up on the June 4. I am hoping that people will get down to the recreation ground in their blue suede shoes and be prepared to be all shook up.”

“Work on planning the event will be continuing to ensure the event is a great success” added Councillor Cawley.
