-

A SCHOOLBOY has been chosen to attend the 25th World Scout Jamboree in South Korea.

James Wilcox, who attends St Edward’s CE Academy in Leek, is to take part in the event which is held for three weeks during August 2023.

James applied to attend the jamboree in October.

He was invited, along with 126 other young people from Staffordshire, aged between 12 and 16, to attend a selection camp weekend.

Leaders had planned a weekend packed with varying activities including, cooking, pioneering and team building.

From that selection weekend he was one of only 36 young people from Staffordshire to be chosen to attend the jamboree.

He will be representing his group, 1st Cheddleton, Moorlands District Scouts, Staffordshire and the UK.

James, aged 12, said: “It will be a fantastic, once-in-alifetime opportunity to take part in so many activities, learn about other cultures and gain skills for life.

“Some of the programme includes zones, scouting for life, smart and scientific, safe and secured and sustainability. I am looking forward to the challenges ahead of me.

“I will be running lots of fundraising activities to help me reach my goal, including a sponsored abseil from an 80 feet bridge.”

James has been in scouting for a few years.

He started out as a Beaver Scout at the age of six, continued onto cubs and is enjoying his time in scouts.

He has achieved his Chief Scout Bronze and Silver Awards and is working towards his Gold Award.

The World Scout Jamboree is a gathering of scouts and guides from all over the world.

It is usually held on a fouryearly cycle and moves around the world.

James is currently fundraising to meet his target of £3,800 which he needs to attend the Jamboree.
