Parties in the parks!
Leek Town Council are planning plenty to look forward to for spring and summer
A SERIES of events are being planned in Leek during the spring and summer months.
These include concerts in Brough Park, Scooterfest and Party in the Park.
In a report to town councillors at the last meeting of Leek Town Council, chairman of the authority’s event committee, Councillor Matt Swindlehurst, said: “On Saturday, March 19 we will be working with local community groups to put on a local writers event. To be centred at the Foxlowe, it will include creative writing groups from Borderland Voices and U3a, as well as local authors.
“David Cliffe will be talking about using historical research to write fiction, Bill Cawley will be talking about writing for the press and there will be a performance area for local writers and poets. We hope to take some readings out into the town centre.
“On Sunday, March 20, although not strictly an event, the centenary of the war memorial at St Edward’s Church will be marked by a rededication ceremony, led by Rev. Nigel Irons. Please arrive by 10am for the usual
Sunday morning service. The rededication service will be held immediately following.
“A series of concerts are planned at Brough Park. A decision was made to support the Friends of Brough Park as they ‘got going again’ as we hopefully come out of the pandemic. A full series of concerts are planned on the second and fourth Sunday’s of the month from May through to the end of September. Councillors Roy Molson, along with Sue Coleman (who is a member of FOBP), are managing bookings and have seven out of the 10 Sundays booked.
“I am in the process of inviting local youth groups (guides, army cadets) to be part of these concerts, helping out with chairs, litter, along with ‘meet and greet.’ In return they will get the chance to publicise their organisations, and we will also make a contribution to their organisational funds. I am also raising sponsorship and, so far, have three firm sponsors with another two in the pipeline. Each sponsor will be connected to a particular concert. We are looking to Staffordshire Moorlands District Council for their usual financial support.
“Scooterfest will take place on Sunday, May 22. With the very welcome news of the return of ‘Scooterfest,’ Anthony Beetham has asked us to work with him to put on music in Sparrow Park the day before. This will coincide with the monthly farmer’s market, so I am just negotiating space with the market organisers.
“Saturday, June 4 is the Platinum Jubilee Weekend, and there will also be music in Sparrow Park. Events applications are in along with the road closures request for the 4th .
“Party in the Park. This is scheduled for Sunday, June 5. The waterslide, bar, fairground and toilets are all booked. A marquee has also been booked to enable the Sunday Supplement market to retain full use of the town council gazebos.”
