Drink-driving mum is fined after being caught more than twice limit at 7.30am

-

MUM Shannon Brookes Lloyd was caught behind the wheel while more than twice the alcohol limit.

The 28-year-old had drunk two bottles of prosecco at a friend’s house when a neighbour asked her to move her car from his lawn.

Magistrates at North Staffordshire Justice Centre heard the offence took place at 7.30am. Prosecutor Zaine Riaz said: “A witness saw this defendant was parked on his lawn in Epsom Close, Cheadle. He approached her and asked her to move her car.

“He could see straight away she appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. He confronted her and called the police, and he then had a confrontation with a male who appeared to be her associate.

“Police arrived and spoke to the defendant. The officer noted she was intoxicated, speaking very slowly, slurring her words, and after some resistance she provided a roadside breath test which she failed. She was arrested.”

Brookes Lloyd, of James Street, Leek, went on to give an alcohol reading of 90 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath - the legal limit is 35. When she was interviewed, she initially denied she had driven the vehicle after drinking.

She said she went to a friend’s and had drunk two bottles of prosecco, and has now pleaded guilty to driving while over the limit.

The offence took place on September 22 last year. The court heard Brookes Lloyd had no previous convictions.

James Hulse, mitigating, said: “She has not had a drink for two months after engaging with alcohol recovery services. She has now found employment as a waitress at a local golf club and is a single mother with one child.

“This was a very short distance driven going from the lawn of the neighbour’s address to her friend’s driveway.”

She must pay £200 plus £169 in court costs and charges. She was disqualified from driving for 20 months, which will be reduced if she completes a drink drive rehabilitation course.

District Judge Waite said: “The most serious aspect of this is the reading.”
