Wetley Rocks Male Voice Choir hold first long service awards

-

IT was all smiles at Westwood Golf Club when Wetley Rocks Male Voice Choir held their annual dinner.

Among the guests was the choir’s new president, Councillor Ben Emery, a supporter of the choir for many years. He succeeds the late Robert Plant who did so much to promote the choir.

One of the first duties for the president was to present long service awards, a first in the choir’s history.

These went to Tony Hawkins (30 years) as well as Clive Sherratt, 47 years and a founder choir member. Clive was also made an Honorary Lifetime President of the choir. Albert Perery who was not well enough to attend had a long service award for his 28 years membership and was made a Life Member of the choir.

A less serious award was made to Roy Colclough, who since July has weekly provided all the men at rehearsals with a brand of throat sweets. He was made “Keeper of the Jakemans”.

After an excellent meal, musical director Ian Jones commented on the choir’s progress.

He said: “The choir has continued to make good progress over the years and thanks should go to our long standing members. Despite these uncertain times we were able to welcome seven new members. With a new repertoire of songs now being rehearsed there is no better time to join the choir.

“Why not give us a try. There’s no formal auditions, you don’t have to read music and you will be most welcome. Above all else though we have fun and it’s good for your health.”

The choir meets every Monday at 7.30pm at Wetley Rocks Methodist Church. Ability to read music is not required, just to enjoy singing and have fun.
