It’s Happy Birthday Clock Tower – 150 today

LEICESTER LANDMARK REACHES MILESTONE BIRTHDAY

THE Haymarket Memorial Clock Tower is celebratin­g a very special birthday today, writes Hayley Watson.

The iconic Leicester monument was unveiled to crowds on July 18, 1868.

It was designed by Victorian architect Joseph Goddard, who designed some of Leicester’s most famous landmarks, including the old Midland Bank building on Granby Street.

Constructe­d mostly from Ketton stone, it depicts four significan­t sons of Leicester – Simon de Montfort, William Wyggeston, Thomas White and Gabriel Newton.

A popular meeting place for generation­s due to its central location, it features in many happy memories for the people of Leicester. Here’s to many more. ■ We will be looking back at the Clock Tower later this week. You can share your memories, too, at:
