It’s Happy Birthday Clock Tower – 150 today
LEICESTER LANDMARK REACHES MILESTONE BIRTHDAY
THE Haymarket Memorial Clock Tower is celebrating a very special birthday today, writes Hayley Watson.
The iconic Leicester monument was unveiled to crowds on July 18, 1868.
It was designed by Victorian architect Joseph Goddard, who designed some of Leicester’s most famous landmarks, including the old Midland Bank building on Granby Street.
Constructed mostly from Ketton stone, it depicts four significant sons of Leicester – Simon de Montfort, William Wyggeston, Thomas White and Gabriel Newton.
