Discarded barbecue embers cause blaze

FIRE officers believe carelessly discarded barbecue embers caused a blaze at a house in Hinckley.

The fire, in Gallus Drive, spread and damaged a wheelie bin, a fence and the wall of a garage in the property next door.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service has issued a number of messages to the public during the current hot spell to encourage people to dispose of barbecue embers responsibly.

One fire crew from Hinckley was called to the blaze shortly after 1pm on Sunday.

In a statement, the service reported: “Call from occupier reporting a wheelie bin fire, spreading to garage.

“On arrival, incident commander confirmed wheelie bin fire spread to fence and garage. Believed cause: carelessly discarded barbecue.”

The crew spent about 30 minutes at the scene putting out the flames and damping down to ensure it did not break out again.
