PARENTS are calling for a new Sikh secondary school in the city because of the success of the first Sikh primary.

After delays in getting going due to funding problems, Falcons Primary opened in October 2014. For the youngsters now completing their time at the school there is no similar secondary school.

Leicester Sikh School Steering Group (LSSSG) said it had been approached by parents from the primary, and other Sikh families, about creating a secondary school.

The group, backed by its partner Khalsa Academies Trust, is now working with the New School Network (NSN) to submit a free school application to the Government.

Falcons Primary, in Gipsy Lane, began with 34 children had 104 by its first anniversary and is rated good by Ofsted.

Harsharan Kaur, who chairs the LSSSG, said: “We were looking for a partner. The school will be welcoming to our Leicester children of any faith or no faith.”

There are no details yet about where the school could be built.

Khalsa Academies Trust has established two secondary schools elsewhere in the UK for Sikhs and non-Sikhs.

Chief executive Nick Singh Kandola said: “This exciting partnership has come at the right time for us.

“All our schools are making great progress. They are popular with families and provide excellent standards.”
