THIEVES carried out a £15,000 raid at a jewellery store after using a heavy-duty chain attached to a van to rip off the back doors.

The raiders tore open the back doors of Robinson’s Jewellers in The Arcade, in Leicester Road, Wigston, at about 10.50pm on Sunday and got away with an assortment of gold jewellery.

Manager Simon Wells said he was called out to the store shortly afterwards.

He said: “They have obviously used a vehicle and a heavy-duty chain to rip off the doors at the back of the store.

“We have an outside steel door then another door. These were both ripped off and the frame badly damaged.

“They then got through the other internal door and into the shop.

“CCTV shows two men using torches. They tried to remove the safe, but it was too heavy.

“They didn’t hang about as they know they don’t have long once the alarm has been activated.

“They smashed a glass cabinet and took an amount of pre-worn gold jewellery.

“They have taken rings, brooches, earrings, bracelets, bangles and a couple of women’s gold watches.

“We don’t know exactly what has been taken yet as we are still taking stock, but I reckon it must be worth between £10,000 and £15,000. “They have certainly caused a lot of damage and made a real mess.’’

A police spokeswoman said: “The rear door of the premises was forced open and items were stolen from a display.
