THE imaging departments at Leicester General Hospital will open its doors to the public tomorrow to offer a behindthe-scenes look into the diverse range of techniques and careers available within the specialist departments.

The multi-disciplinary team made up of more than 500 staff offer diagnostic imaging services such as X-ray, CT and MRI scanning, ultrasound scanning, breast screening and forensic imaging.

Imaging services are offered across all three of Leicester’s hospitals’ acute sites, as well as working in the community, where possible, to provide examinations closer to home.

Cathy Lea, lead general manager for imaging at Leicester’s Hospitals, said: “We are one of the largest imaging departments in the country. Every month, our teams perform over 2,000 angiograms and fluoroscopic examinations, 4,000 MRI scans, 7,000 CT scans, 7,000 ultrasound scans and 23,000 X-Rays.

“Our breast imaging team also offers screening to more than 40,000 women per year and perform over 4,000 mammograms per month.”

During the day, visitors will have the chance to meet staff, tour the facilities and see demonstrations of how diagnostic tests and investigations are performed. There will be an opportunity to visit the imaging department and the breast imaging department. There will be a mix of clinical and non-clinical staff available to answer questions on what it is like to work in the various roles within imaging. Representatives from the University of Derby will be on hand to advise on the BSc and MSc courses in radiography. Leicester trained student radiographers will complete their academic learning at the University of Derby. Cathy said: “There will also be an opportunity to learn about apprenticeship training routes into imaging.” The department, based at Leicester General Hospital, Gwendolen Road, Leicester LE5 4PW, will be open from 10am to 4pm tomorrow.

The open day is free to the public, but the usual on-site visitor car parking charges still apply. Larger school or college groups are also welcomed.
