Historic mill on the market

- By KAREN ANTCLIFF Property editor

A FORMER restaurant with a riverside location has gone on the market as a home.

Cossington Mill Restaurant, a grade II-listed building, closed as a restaurant in 2002.

It is being sold now by Bentons, with a price of £625,000, six years after planning permission was granted to convert it into a five-bedroom home.

Purhasers get a garden frontage on to the River Soar and fishing and mooring rights.

The building has been adapted over the years, starting life as a water mill.

The selling agent said the site was used for corn milling up until 1657, then corn and paper milling were carried out under the same roof until 1827.

It reverted to milling only corn until 1928 and then the machinery was removed and the mill gradually fell into disrepair and dilapidation.

In 1938 the property was bought for conversion into tea rooms.

It was later sold, altered and restored to create a restaurant.

The agent said: “The Cossington Mill Restaurant was exceptionally well known and respected.

“It finally closed in 2002. Planning permission was granted in 2013 to convert the building into a five bedroom home.”

As it stands the building provides a large breakfast kitchen with a separate utility area and there is a rear lobby with access to two storage rooms and a toilet.

The first floor is open-plan and this large room has a double height ceiling.

Some of the original detail from the water mill remains in the ceiling. There is also a mezzanine level.

The agent said: “An inspection is highly recommended to appreciate the outstanding potential of this development project.”
