Trust set up in memory of women’s football star
TEAM CAPTAIN MOLLY DIED AT 25
A FUND-raising trust has been created in memory of Molly Webb, the Loughborough Foxes footballer who died suddenly.
The 25-year-old had been suffering flu-like symptoms for several days and her condition deteriorated rapidly.
Her death on Sunday, January 6, prompted messages of condolences on social media to the family and club from football teams across the country.
Molly’s Gift is the idea of Molly’s partner Emily Sharpe and Molly’s close friend Leandra Whelband, who were also team-mates of Molly, the captain of the Loughborough Foxes Vixens.
They say the trust is designed to provide funding opportunities for youth development in sport, particularly for disadvantaged children, something that was close to Molly’s heart.
Money raised will allow sports clubs, schools and other community projects, to apply for grants through the trust to fund activities, purchase equipment and facilities or to simply encourage youngsters to pursue their sporting talent.
Since the trust was created by Emily and Leandra, Loughborough Foxes club has raised £1,000 and public donations have already reached £500, which they say is testament to how well thought of Molly was.
Emily said: “Molly worked as a sports co-ordinator in primary schools and enjoyed coaching the Loughborough Foxes junior teams in her spare time.
“Her passion lay in encouraging children to take part and enjoy sport and would never allow ability or lack of opportunity to obstruct their progression.
“Molly was a role model and inspiration to the children she worked with and this trust allows her legacy to live on.
“The trust is the perfect way for Molly’s kind and loving nature to continue to be recognised, having a positive impact on the local community; something Molly achieved so effortlessly.”
The trust will be officially launched on Bank Holiday Monday, August 26, at Woodbrook Vale School, when there will be a memorial football match featuring family and friends of Molly, including current and former Loughborough Foxes players.
The event runs from noon to 4pm. Entry is free but donations to the Molly’s Gift foundation are welcome.
Emily said: “Molly would be so proud of everyone involved. She was a true inspiration and we hope that by giving back to youth sport and development it will bring smiles to people’s faces.”
