Takeaway delivers for blind theft victim

-

A TAKeAWAY owner has delivered two free meals to a blind man who had his dinner stolen while sitting on a bench.

rafique Miah, a director at Masalas, in Humberstone, Leicester, wanted to help Benjamin Daley Johnson, whose £10 meal deal was taken last Thursday.

The meal was stolen as he sat with his guide dog and his girlfriend’s 18-month-old son outside Marks & spencer, in Humberstone Gate.

rafique said: “it’s difficult to comprehend how anyone could stoop so low as to actually steal food from a blind person.

“This terrible crime does not show Leicester in a good light.

“i wanted to reach out to Benjamin to help him and also to show him that there are good people about in this city of ours.

“it particularly touched me as, without my glasses, i can barely see.”

Benjamin, who was born partiallysighted and went fully blind at the age of 17, said he had been shaken by the theft.

The 36-year-old, of Thurnby Lodge, said: “i can’t believe anyone could do such a thing to a blind person.

“it’s hard to imagine how desperate you must be to steal off a blind person. if they had asked i would have given them the food.”

On Monday, rafique delivered an evening meal of tandoori rings, chicken mango korma, pilau rice, a garlic and coriander naan, a chocolate fudge brownie and a can of pop.

On Tuesday, he took Benjamin a lunch of shish kebabs, a chicken tikka biryani, korma sauce, a naan and a can of pop.

Benjamin said: “The food was delicious. i can’t thank rafique enough.

“i have used that takeaway before and will continue to do so now.

“rafique’s generosity has restored my faith in humanity, which i had lost after what happened to me.”

Masalas, in Uppingham road, was named best takeaway in this year’s Leicester curry Awards.
