SHOPPERS looking for bargain furniture and household wares may soon have a new place to visit in Burbage.

The Salvation Army has revealed its plans to open a shop in the retail park being built on Rugby Road, near the railway bridge.

The outlet will follow the charity’s Donation Centre+ model, with customers able to drop off and buy items. A collection and delivery service will also be available.

It would take up one of the larger units in the complex of seven outlets and will be three times the size of a typical charity shop.

Construction is well under way on the site with the retail hub to be completed in November.

A spokesman for the Christian charity said: “The donation centre is in an urban location, highly visible with parking and easy access for donors by public transport, car and foot.”

The shop will include a strong fashion, household and furniture offering and will supply stock to other Salvation Army shops in the area.

It would be one of around a dozen shops the charity is planning to set up as part of the Donation Centre+ model, which it launched in October 2016.

There are nine of the centres already in operation with another to open in Barnsley in early October.

Another 12 or so are in various stages in the planing process, including the Burbage shop.

The store in unit three would be neighboured by a Greggs and a tanning salon run by Consol, with Greggs recently saying it hopes to open a shop in the village this year.

The popular bakery chain already has two branches nearby in Hinckley town centre, one in Castle Street and the other in the Britannia Centre.

It has applied to install two air conditioning units and an outside sign in unit two in the Burbage complex, with the shop to face on to Rugby Road.

Consol has applied for a change of use for unit one’s current designated use as a restaurant or cafe.

The salon would feature eight cubicles and sunbeds along with a toilet and staff room.

Each of units one to five would feature glazed entrances, timber cladding and curved roofs.

Other groups set to take on an outlet in the 1.36-acre complex include Johnsons Dry Cleaners, Co-op, Topps Tiles and Toolstation.

Johnsons formerly used the site and before that it was home to the DM Rock and Sons car sales.

The Salvation Army has a church on Lancaster Road in Hinckley.
