Road trippin’ in the USA

-

‘DUDE, we’re on our way!” says one hairy biker to another. They are about to head out on the iconic Route 66 through America and it feels like this is the journey these two bikers were always meant to make.

It is indeed a long held ambition to ride the historic tarmac spanning more than 2,000 miles from Chicago to California, through nine states.

We have an endless

fascination with our friends across the pond, and the Hairy Biker guide to the country’s best loved foods is more than welcome. Starting in Chicago, the Bikers – aka Dave Myers and Si King – head to a restaurant known for serving meat in a sub, dripping with juices.

They learn the best way to eat the soggy sub without getting messy – it involves a very particular ‘stance’ and the beards probably won’t help.

Later they enjoy a championship-winning apple pie and learn how Route 66 entered American folklore by connecting small town America from East to West and enabling it to prosper.

On the move, there are roadside spectacles to enjoy, such as the huge fibreglass figures known as ’muffler men’.

The pair are excited to receive an invitation from the Amish community, where they cook with them and learn lots more about this very different way of life.

And crossing the Mississippi into Missouri, Dave and Si visit St Louis where they discover ‘concrete custard’ – a treat so rich and thick it’s served upside down.

A culinary, banter-filled road trip, you’ll be hungry for more.
