Birstall ladies and Beedles Lake boys triumph

-

BIRSTALL GC are the 2019 ladies’ County Foursomes Champions.

They beat Glen Gorse in the final of the season-long inter-club knockout tournament when they clashed in near perfect weather conditions at Rothley Park.

Birstall were runners-up last year when Kirby Muxloe were champions, but went one better on this occasion when they finished 3-up on aggregate against Glen Gorse.

In the first match, Katie Underwood and Sue Bailey of Birstall played Francesca Brimm and Lorraine Penrice, of Glen Gorse.

Glen Gorse reached the 10th hole 1-up and took 10 and 12 to go further ahead.

But Birstall took 13 to reduce the deficit only to go back to 3-down when they lost the 15th hole. They won 17 to get it back to 2-down, but lost the last to finish their match 3-down.

Clare Bailey and Jo Brocksopp, of Birstall, played Harriett Hewitt and Julie Hyatt, of Glen Gorse, in the second match.

Honours were even at the turn, but then Birstall took charge of the game. They were 4-up on the 16th tee, which was halved. But Birstall won 17 and 18 to give them a win of 6-up in this clash and this meant they were the overall champions by 3-holes at the end of a tantalising tussle.

BEEDLES Lake GC won the county golf union boys league final. They will now represent Leicestershire and Rutland in the England Golf Junior Championship Club tournament next year.

The four clubs competed at Melton Mowbray GC over 15-holes, instead of the full 18 because of work on the course. The best three scores counted from each team of four.

Beedles Lake scored 89 points to win by one from Cosby, with The Leicestershire third on 87 and Kibworth fourth on 71.
