SOBERING NIGHT FOR CITY AS LIVERPOOL DOMINATE THROUGHOUT IN SIX-POINTER

-

LEICESTER City suffered their heaviest defeat in more than 18 months as their much-hyped topof-the-table clash with Liverpool ended in a hugely disappointing 4-0 defeat last night,

Brendan Rodgers’ side were dominated from start to finish for their first home loss of the season, Jurgen Klopp’s title favourites extending their lead at the top of the division to 13 points and with a game in hand.

It was a devastating blow to City’s faint title hopes on a night when the gap could have been cut to seven points, but instead Liverpool

now have a seemingly unassailable lead.

Roberto Firmino with two, James Milner and Trent Alexander-Arnold got the goals for the visitors, condemning Leicester to their worst loss under Rodgers and their biggest since a 5-0 thumping at Crystal Palace in April 2018.

Rodgers said on Match of the Day afterwards that his team had not had enough time on the ball against Liverpool, in their first game since being crowned World Club champions in Qatar last weekend.

“We didn’t have enough patience in the first half. We never secured the ball which meant we had to defend for long periods,” said Rodgers. “The players gave everything. It’s a great learning game for us. We just didn’t have long enough periods with the ball. When you don’t against a top team

– world champions – it becomes difficult for you.

“We have come a long way in this period. The players have been brilliant and this is another learning game for them, they see the physicality you need to compete.

“People were trying to put us in a race with Liverpool but we know where we are.”

City have an opportunity to end the year on a high, taking on West Ham on Saturday evening.
