CHRISTMAS WEEK C’EST CHIC

- JOANNE watkinson

CHRISTMAS week is a time of extremes and our wardrobes have to work hard to keep up the pace.

For the lucky ones, it’s a week filled with family visits and visitors.

After almost a month of over-indulging in festive cheer, I would much rather be wearing stretchy pants than sequins, but guests don’t want to see that so I have a few tricks up my sleeve for making it look like I have made an effort, and there’s not a novelty elf jumper or bauble earring in sight.

If you’re anything like me and your

PJs are your favourite clothes, then a pyjama-inspired blouse is the lazy-girl’s answer to looking pulled together.

If money was no object, I would buy a full silk pyjama suit from

Asceno, but Topshop has some fantastic satin blouses in navy blue, ivory and khaki for £29, that do the same job. Slip them on with jeans, no ironing required.

Next up: hair. A good blow dry will make you look “polished” but mine doesn’t always last as long around Christmas, keeping my head warm on pre-pub walks causes hat-hair, rain induces frizz, and warm kitchens filled with food smells are the final nail in my bouncy blow’s coffin.

Dry shampoo (Batiste – the original and the best) helps, but hair accessories are an even better way to distract from hair that isn’t freshly washed.

Oliver Bonas has vintageinspired crescent moon and star hair clips, while sparkly headbands look great on long and short hair. If Zara’s black beaded version is good enough for the Duchess of Cambridge it is good enough for me.

My next secret weapon is socks, sparkly ones. Hands up if you have ever been asked or felt obliged to remove your shoes when visiting a home with a pristine cream carpet?

Sparkly socks work with open toes, boots and trainers. Don’t get caught out. Head to & Other Stories for the best range.

There you go, Christmas week survival wardrobe sorted, no glam squad required.
