WOMAN THROWN INTO AIR IN CRASH
TWO PEDESTRIANS TAKEN TO HOSPITAL IN SEPARATE INCIDENTS IN CITY
TWO pedestrians were taken to hospital yesterday after two separate road accidents in Leicester.
A woman was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary after being hit by a silver VW as she walked along the pavement in Gwendolen Road, Evington.
The woman, who had been part of a group on the pavement, was flung into the air by the impact. The car was badly damaged, with a smashed windscreen, and some railings and a vehicle parked behind the railings were also damaged.
Police said the woman received no life-threatening or life-changing injuries. The driver of the car was uninjured.
Police, paramedics and firefighters attended the scene and the woman, who ended up on the ground between two parked cars, was treated on the pavement and then taken to hospital.
A section of Gwendolen Road near to Evington Valley Road was shut for nearly two hours as a result of the crash. Meanwhile, a male pedestrian was taken to hospital after colliding with a car outside the entrance to the HSBC bank, in Belgrave Road, Belgrave, at about 2.10pm.
An ambulance took the injured man to the Queen’s Medical Centre, in Nottingham. The air ambulance landed at the scene, but its services were not required.
Police blocked off the two outward bound lanes on Belgrave Road. Traffic was diverted via MacDonald
Road. At one point traffic was backed up all the way to the inner ring road.
A witness, who works in a nearby shop, said the incident happened right outside the HSBC.
They said: “I walked past and saw the area right outside the HSBC all taped off. There was a pillow and blankets on the road.
“It looked like people had been trying to keep the injured person comfortable.”
A police spokeswoman said: “We were called at 2.12pm to a report of a collision between a car and a male pedestrian.
An East Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “We received a call at 2.10pm to Belgrave Road, Leicester. The caller reported a collision between a car and a pedestrian.
“We sent a paramedic in a car, a crewed ambulance and the air ambulance and transported one patient to Queen’s Medical Centre.”
As the Leicester Mercury went to press, no details on the condition of the casualty had been released.
No arrests have been made in respect of either of the collisions.
