A SOFT-PLAY centre and eco-gym is being planned which will have its electricity generated by people who use the treadmills and exercise bikes.

The project would see a disused industrial unit in Tournament Way, Ashby, converted into a leisure facility.

Personal trainer Julian Orme, of Storme Ltd, is behind the scheme, which he said will serve the town’s growing population.

In documents submitted to North West Leicestershire District Council, he said: “Storme Ltd will be the first ecopowered gym in the district, the only spa facility in Ashby, as well as the only facility to have an area for children while individuals are using the gym facilities.

“The proposal is to create an affordable activity facility open to all ages, promoting an inclusive healthy lifestyle.

“The soft play/creche will be affordable, in comparison with other facilities within the area, and meet the needs of families within the local and wider area.”

There would be 27 pieces of specialist gym equipment.

Julian said: “Human energy is used and will be captured to power parts of the gym.

“Any excess will be transferred back into the national grid.”

The proposal includes a cafe for gym users and employees of nearby companies.

If the scheme is approved by the council it could lead to the creation of 33 jobs.

Planning officers at the council are considering the proposals.
