Celtic rule out Benkovic loan move
CELTIC boss Neil Lennon has distanced the club from a loan move for Leicester City defender Filip Benković, writes James Rushton.
Leicester signed the centre-half in 2018, paying £13 million to Dinamo Zagreb, and sent him on loan to Celtic.
He won the Scottish Premier League with the club and has been linked with a second loan spell.
Benković is yet to make a Premier League appearance for the Foxes and is looking for a move so that he can get more game time. Regarding the loan move, Lennon was asked about a move for the young City defender in a press conference.
“I got asked that at the weekend but we’re well covered at centrehalf,” he said.
Benković has also been linked with a loan move to Derby County or Middlesbrough in the Championship.
However, there is a caveat; the defender’s move will not take place unless Leicester sign a new defender.
City have already been linked with Southampton’s Jannik Vestergaard.
“Only if we brought one (centre back) in,” said manager Brendan Rodgers, when questioned about a Benkovic transfer.
“That would give him (Benkovic) the opportunity to go and get the games he needs.
“If we don’t, we will need the cover.”
