Fancy a fry-up? We try the cafe that’s rated No.1 for breakfast on TripAdvisor

-

IHAVE you stopped feeling guilty about your Christmas over-indulgences? Yes? That’s good – we can start talking about full English breakfasts again, writes Becky Jones. We love a good fry-up and there are plenty on offer in Leicester.

There is only one place, though, that can lay claim to being the number one place for breakfast in Leicester, according to TripAdvisor reviewers – and that’s Cafe Two Ten, in Narborough Road.

So just how good is its full English? I paid a visit to find out...

Venue

Even if you’ve not visited this cafe, you will have no doubt driven past it.

It’s in Narborough Road, right by the distinctive West End Bridge.

Cafe Two Ten has been open since 2006 and serves breakfast and lunch seven days a week.

It is a small but well presented cafe, which looks bright and clean. Indeed, it has a 5/5 food hygiene rating from the city council

It has a modern style, with chunky wood panelling and plants dotted around the cafe.

It was very busy on the weekday morning I visited, so it did feel very cosy when all the tables were occupied!

In addition to the main cafe, there is also a cabin at the back, providing extra seating which surely comes in very handy.

Food

I was there to try out breakfast – and wow, there is a lot of choice on the blackboard.

You could have an English breakfast, a vegetarian breakfast, a vegan breakfast or a gluten-free breakfast (all £4.25 small, £5.25 large).

There is a breakfast burger (£6.95) an American breakfast (£7.75) which includes a rump steak, bacon, Lincolnshire sausage, hash brown, bubble and squeak, beans, tomatoes, egg and toast, and a pancake breakfast (£5.15 small, £6.15 large) which includes mini pancakes, maple syrup, bacon, hash browns and scrambled egg.

Other options include eggs Benedict (£4.95), bacon sandwich/ cob (£2.50), breakfast sandwich/cob (£4.25), and porridge (£1.50 small, £1.95 large).

For me, there was only one thing for it - the large English breakfast.

Essentially, the difference between this and the small version is that you get two of most things rather than one. And I was feeling hungry!

The breakfast arrived in superspeedy time, about five minutes after I’d ordered (you order at the counter) and it certainly looked like a generous amount of food.

The Lincolnshire sausages were good, the rashers of bacon were thick and tasty, and the poached eggs were spot on – producing lovely runny yolks when I cut into them.

You get a choice of poached, fried or scrambled eggs when you order your breakfast

The grilled tomato was okay, if slightly burnt on the top (tinned tomatoes are also available) and the hash browns were crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle, as they should be.

The toast was disappointing, though, as it lacked any crunch, so was more like warm bread.

Verdict

This was a tasty, filling breakfast, which at £5.25 offered good value. Is it the best place for breakfast in Leicester, though? Not sure. I may have to do a bit more investigating!

Our rating: 4/5.
