Pupils witness baseball attack

MAN REPEATEDLY HITS VEHICLE AND ASSAULTS DRIVER OUTSIDE SCHOOL

CHILDREN witnessed a man attacking a vehicle and its driver with a baseball bat.

Video posted on Twitter shows a man repeatedly swinging the bat at the driver’s door and window of a pick-up truck.

The incident took place as parents lined up to collect their youngsters from school in Mill Lane, Enderby, at 3pm on Monday.

The man, wearing a blue top, is seen on the video swinging the bat from behind his head, landing several blows on the driver’s door.

He then manages to yank open the door and can be seen swinging the bat with the same force at whoever is inside the cab.

Parents of children from Danemill Primary can be heard exclaiming in shock as the attack took place.

Up to eight police cars are reported to have attended the scene.

On social media, one poster said: “Fight outside Danemill School – peak time, kids coming out! Disgusting! Need locking up!”

Another posted: “Made me feel sick. The poor people in the car and kids everywhere! Disgusting.”

A third said: “I couldn’t believe it. Just before this happened he let me and the boys cross the road.

“I thought he stopped his van and got out to direct traffic but then this.”

Paul Stone, chief executive of Discovery Schools Academies Trust, said: “We are aware of an incident that took place within the vicinity of

Danemill School on Monday. This matter is now a police investigat­ion.

“The school takes the safeguardi­ng of all its pupils seriously. This incident happened off the school site and out of school hours.

“However, the school will be doing all that it can to support the police with their investigat­ion.”

A police spokeswoma­n said: “Officers are carrying out further inquiries after a man was assaulted in Enderby.

“A man in a car was assaulted with a baseball bat.

“Prior to the incident his vehicle was also damaged.

“Inquiries are ongoing to identify the suspect and officers are urging anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them.

“The incident took place close to a school when children were going home for the day.

“It was a distressin­g incident for those who witnessed it and we are taking it extremely seriously.”

She said officers from the neighbourh­ood policing area were in Mill Lane area Tuesday afternoon to offer reassuranc­e and support to those who may have been affected by what they saw.
