A BURGLAR led police on a chase through a village after stealing jewellery.

Jamie Shirley also threatened an elderly man as he was running from officers chasing him in Sileby last year.

The 31-year-old, of Church Hill Road, Mountsorrel, pleaded guilty at Leicester Crown Court in November to one count of aggravated burglary, one of actual bodily harm and one of common assault following the incident last summer.

At 3pm on August 27, Shirley entered an address in Seagrave Road, Sileby. Once inside he stole a set of car keys.

The occupants of the address were home at the time and wrestled with Shirley to try to stop him. Shirley dropped the keys and fled.

Shortly afterwards, he broke into another property in the same street and this time the occupant was out.

He stole jewellery from the address, before leaving and running off towards Sileby Memorial Park.

Officers who had been called to the area following reports of the break-ins spotted Shirley and chased him.

As Shirley attempted to avoid capture, he clambered over garden fences before entering another house in Haybrooke Road through an open patio door.

He grabbed the elderly resident and threatened the man as he looked for a way to escape. As he tried to leave through the back door, he was confronted by officers and arrested. Detective Constable James Clayton, from the force’s Complex Investigation Team, said: “Shirley is a serial offender who thought nothing of using threats and violence towards his victims. Although no one was seriously injured or needed hospital treatment, I am in no doubt they would have been extremely frightened by their ordeal.

“I hope the fact Shirley has been brought to justice will allow the victims to move forward and put the events of that day behind them.” Shirley was sentenced to seven years and four months in prison.
