Hiss been a bit too hot! Snake takes a cooling dip

- Andy.rush@reachplc.com

A MAN who spotted a metre-long snake swimming in a brook managed to catch it on camera.

Ben Wing, from Loughborough, spotted the “beauty” cooling off from the recent hot weather in Black Brook, off Derby Road in Dishley.

He contacted our sister paper the Loughborough Echo to share his picture.

The snake appears to be a grass snake.

According to the British Trust for Ornithology, grass snakes can grow to more than a metre long – which fits with the specimen spotted by Ben.

They tend to find places near water to live and hunt for food, so the Black Brook’s banks would make an ideal habitat.

They rarely bite and pose no threat to humans, and are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

If you can definitively identify the breed, Loughborough editor Andy Rush would like to hear from you.
