University investigates ‘blackened face’ photos

-

DE Montfort University is investigating a complaint that a group of white students blackened their faces.

Pictures circulating on social media show at least nine men, in jackets and ties, who appear to have darkened their faces.

It is not clear when or where the pictures were taken. Most students are away from Leicester because of the coronavirus lockdown.

The Mercury is unable to show the images for legal reasons.

The pictures were tweeted to the university by a woman who said it was not acceptable the images had been sent to her black boyfriend.

The university said it is investigating the matter.

“Discrimination, harassment and bullying of any kind are not, and will not be, tolerated at DMU,” it said.

“Our investigations into this matter are being carried out in line with our robust policies in this area and in consultation with our students’ union.

“While we understand the interest in the matter, we must now allow the time and space for the investigation to take place.”

De Montfort Students’ Union (DSU) said: “DSU is aware of the images currently circulating on Twitter involving DMU students.

“We are extremely concerned by these photos and are working with the university to investigate the matter as a matter of priority.

“There is absolutely no place for racism or inappropriate behaviour within DSU.

“Earlier this week we released a statement saying we are in complete solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and we will do everything we can to ensure you are surrounded by allies.

“This will always be the case and we will continue to work with all our members to bring about change.”
