MOTORISTS who slowed down to film the aftermath of a collision on the A42 involving a car and two lorries on their mobiles have been slammed by the emergency services.

The northbound carriageway of the A42 was closed after what Highways England described as a “serious accident”, near the junction for Ashby, just after 5pm on Wednesday.

Emergency services spent more than two hours at the scene of the multi-vehicle collision while the rescue and recovery operation took place.

The motorway was closed between junction 13 at the A511 Flagstaff Island for Ashby and Coalville, and junction 14 at the Tonge interchange towards the M1 and A453, near Castle Donington.

The Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service shared photos crew members took at the scene, showing the cabin of one of

the lorries gutted in the blaze, and issued a warning to drivers.

A spokesperson said: “The amount of drivers on the opposite carriageway filming with their phones as they drove past was crazy. Absolutely unbelievable.

“This is not okay and could cause an accident and, at worst, death.”

“If caught, you will receive fines and points on your licence, or possibly a jail sentence. Put your phone away while driving. It’s just not worth the risk.”

Crews from Ashby and Loughborough fire stations attended the incident, where one casualty trapped inside one of the vehicles had to be freed by firefighters and taken to hospital. The extent of any injuries suffered has not been made public.

The incident was cleared and the road reopened shortly after 8pm.
