‘We will prosecute’ - warning as flytipping reports double

COUNCIL bosses have vowed to take action against flytippers after incidents in one Leicestershire district more than doubled last month.

Blaby District Council received 129 reports of dumped rubbish in May, compared to 62 reports in the same month last year.

Councillor Sharon Coe said: “Flytipping is not only disgusting and a blight on our beautiful district, it puts enormous pressure on our resources.

“Anyone not taking responsibility to ensure their waste is being taken away by a registered waste carrier risks being complicit in scarring the landscape of their community.

“We will not tolerate this mindless behaviour from some individuals or traders.”

Incidents across the county have increased during lockdown, with some suggesting tips being closed are the reason.

Household waste and recycling centres were forced to close when strict lockdown measures were announced on March 23.

Seven of the county council’s sites and one city tip reopened at the end of last month. County residents have to book a slot online, while city did not operate such a system and have seen massive queues.

One Blaby district resident said: “I’ve been trying to get an appointment but some people just won’t wait. It’s not fair on those of us who do to then see piles of rubbish at beauty spots or the side of the road.

“Rubbish has been collected throughout, there’s really no excuse for people to just dump stuff wherever they think just to get it out of their own way.”

Coun Coe assured residents that people found responsible will be punished.

“We can and will take action against flytippers where evidence is available, and urge anyone who witnesses or sees flytipping to report it to us online,” she said. ■■Blaby residents are asked to report incidents at:
