How I would make our city a better place

-

I HAVE some ideas with reference to “Making our city a better place” (Leicester Mercury, June 4).

First and foremost, there could be a gym with a difference, like Edufit, formerly in Midland Street, which catered for children and adults with learning or physical disabilities, as well as individuals, who had suffered trauma.

Edufit was different as its head man was a former French Olympic coach, who has also worked for the United Nations,. He used a psychological method to get people to take up some form of exercise without them knowing it.

He also ran My Health, a campaign and course that dealt with all forms of illness and associated risk factors in relation to nutrition and exercise.

In my view, there would be a strong demand for these services and products.

Idea number two: Leicester Ladies FC to be given a peppercorn rent deal on a more permanent base. Their ground could be called the Mary Rudkin Stadium in honour of the late and truly great former Leicester Ladies and England player.

Since the closure of the family entertainment complex Superbowl, where part of the Highcross centre now stands, families have had nowhere to play 10-pin bowling, pool, snooker and darts, or have a flutter on a slot machine.

There should be a greater variety of stalls on Leicester Market and cheaper rents, with pop-up provision for community groups and want-to-be entrepreneurs.

Also, clearer signposting to the market. The stalls could be powered by solar lighting and have clear Perspex roofs to make the most of natural sunlight.

It could have its own speaker’s corner for debaters and buskers.

The city would benefit from a business fund for start ups or existing businesses that lose trade because their products or services are not defined in plain English.

Just like Filbert Fox, Leicester City Council could have a mascot of its own. The identity and image could be put out for discussion, though I think it would have to be the Clock Tower myself, since this image is truly iconic of this city.

I think this could aid community cohesion.
