NOSTALGIA
Every day during lockdown, we will look through the Leicester Mercury archives for photos that catch our eye on a year-by-year, chronological basis. Today we look at 1987
1: Norwich keeper Bryan Gunn dives, but Gary McAllister sends his penalty wide anyway in this game from February, 1987. The Foxes lost 2-0 2: Work to repair a brick canal bridge at Foxton Bottom Lock, on the Grand Union Canal 3: Granby Primary head Mike Ross joined a playtime skipping session in February. Deputy head Peter Smith is pictured, right
4: Product assembler Stephen Ottey, left, and Steve Smith working on a backhoe loader at Caterpillar, Desford
5: We’ve no idea who’s enjoying a chinwag on this archive picture. Can anyone enlighten us?
6: Champion chums Spot and Topsy celebrated the long and short of Cruft’s acclaim with a barking good bow-wow. Cairn terrier Topsy and
St Bernard Spot clasped glory with all paws when they brought best of breed titles back to Leicestershire. Respective owners Patrick and June Hooton of Sinope, near Coalville, and Pat and Hazel Churchill, of Long Whatton near Loughborough, were also awarded special prizes as best breeders of 1987 in the Cairn terrier and St Bernard categories.
Regular readers may have noticed a new look to your daily dose of Nostalgia. This is because of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the necessity to furlough some members of staff. However, it gives us the opportunity ro raid our archives for some photographs through the ages, and there is additional nostalgia content running regularly, which we are publishing in partnership with the city council’s The Story of Leicester initiative
