1,500 caught speeding in two-week operation

-

A DRIVER caught doing 105mph on a 50mph stretch was among 1,500 speeders caught by police during a two-week lockdown campaign.

The offender was caught driving at more than twice the speed limit on the A607 Thurmaston bypass.

Other cases highlighted by road safety officials include drivers reaching nearly 70mph in 30mph zones in Leicester.

In all, 1,497 speeders face a fine of £100 and three penalty points after being caught by a combination of speed cameras and patrolling police.

Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Road Safety Partnership spokesman Jonathan Clarkson said: “Between Monday, May 25 and Sunday, June 7, we have recorded 1,497 speeding offences, including one vehicle travelling at 105mph, over twice the speed limit, on the A607 Newark Road.

“We also saw high speeds in Leicester, including 66mph in King Richards Road West and 68mph on the A563 Thurmaston Lane.

“I would like to take this opportunity to remind drivers that police patrols maintain a visible and proactive presence and our speed camera network is operational in order to keep everyone safe.

“As more road users take advantage of the lighter evenings and the summer weather it is worth reminding road users to share the road and drive more considerately around cyclists, pedestrians, horse riders and motorcyclists.”

Current traffic levels are estimated to be on average about two-thirds their normal level.
