POLICE were hunting for the driver of a white flat-bed truck yesterday following an alleged hit-and-run incident on Saturday night, writes Isaac Ashe.

Two men, whom it is thought had earlier been involved in an argument with another man, were injured after being hit by a vehicle in Measham’s High Street at 9.50pm. It is alleged that the two men, who were taken to hospital but have since been discharged, had been racially abused before the incident, which police say “could have been much worse”.

There is some video footage of the aftermath of the incident on the Mercury’s website, showing a white flat-bed speeding off.

The vehicle has since been recovered in Heather and police said yesterday afternoon that inquiries were continuing to locate the driver.

TWO men were subjected to racial abuse before being injured in an apparent hit-and-run in Measham late on Saturday night.

Police were called to High Street in the village at 9.50pm following a report of the “non-stop” collision.

The two victims were allegedly racially abused before being injured in the incident, which police say “could have been much worse”.

The men were taken to hospital for treatment to their injuries and have since been discharged.

It is believed that an argument had taken place between the two injured men and a third man inside a premises on High Street shortly before the collision took place.

The driver of a white flatbed pickup van had left the scene before emergency services arrived.

There is some video footage of the aftermath of the incident on the Mercury’s website, showing a white flat-bed speeding off.

The vehicle has since been recovered in Heather and police said yesterday afternoon that inquiries were continuing to locate the driver.

High Street was cordoned off by officers to allow for an investigation of the scene, between Bosworth Road and Navigation Street.

Detective Inspector Chris Brett, who is leading the investigation, said: “This was a nasty incident where two men were hurt. It is fortunate they only sustained minor injuries – it could have been much worse.

“We have been carrying out a number of enquiries since receiving the report and this includes continuing to locate the driver of the pickup, abandoned in Heather.

“We would like to appeal to anyone who was in the area of High Street at about 9.50pm and saw the pedestrians before the collision, the vehicle involved or the incident itself.

“If you have information and haven’t yet spoken to officers please get in touch. Equally, if anyone captured what happened on their mobile phones, dashcam or CCTV we want to hear from you.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 101. The incident is not being treated as terror-related.
