Moped rider was caught over the alcohol limit in pedestrian area
MAN ‘RODE IN CONVOY’ WITH BIKER
A MOPED rider was arrested for being over the alcohol limit after police caught him and another biker entering the pedestrianised New Walk area of Leicester.
David Wells was spotted riding “in convoy” with the other biker throughout the city centre, in the early hours of Thursday, March 12.
The 26-year-old, of Pool Road, Newfoundpool, Leicester, appeared before city magistrates to admit a single charge of drink driving.
He was arrested after police officers spotted him and his pal riding into the New Walk area around 2.30am, prosecutor Sabrina Sahota told the court.
Ms Sahota said: “Officers were on patrol when they noticed motorbikes being driven in convoy around the city centre.
“The officers saw the riders turn into the pedestrian area of New Walk and stopped them there.
“The defendant provided a positive (drink-drive) sample.”
He was taken to a police station and tested again.
His lower reading was 56mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath - the legal limit is 35mg, Ms Sahota said.
When interviewed Wells answered
NO ENTRY: The moped rider was caught in the pedestrianised New Walk area
“no comment” to officers’ questions.
Perminder Bassi, representing Wells, said: “He had been to a social event and had one drink too many.
“He states it was poor judgement and apologises. He’s never been in this situation before.”
Magistrates disqualified Wells for 12 months but told him this could be reduced by 12 weeks if he chose to for and complete a drink-driving awareness course.
Wells was fined £207 and ordered to pay prosecution costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £32, leaving him £324 out of pocket.
