South Asian culture festival postponed due to lockdown
A LEICESTER-BASED festival celebrating South Asian culture has been postponed due to the local lockdown.
This is the festival’s 10th year, and despite the pandemic, organisers have adapted it into a digital experience.
The free event was set to take place online from July 13-26, but this has been put back to August 10-23, with the exception of a few events.
Although the festival has been repackaged for online, it is managed and produced from Leicester.
In a statement shared on social media, organisers said: “The festival team has had to make an assessment about what is safe and possible within the new restrictions.”
The first three events will go ahead as scheduled: An Indian Summer Open exhibition (July 13); 400 Years: Britain and India (July 20-30) and An Indian Summer activity book launch, July 30
The Open exhibition will explore the theme of freedom, inspired by the anniversaries of South Asian independence celebrated in recent years.
A creative exploration of the relationship between Britain and India will also be presented through a series of short films.
Ahead of the new online festival dates, an activity book can be downloaded, offering hours of free, creative activities.
Events to be rescheduled include home cinema experience, screening Bend it Like Beckham and Slumdog Millionaire with wraparound cooking tutorials and playlists; a programme of online workshops, including cookery demonstrations and henna; live-streamed performances celebrating the last 10 years of An Indian Summer’s artists and a livestreamed Indian classical music concert.
