Why wasn’t city mayor masked with Morrison?

-

It was great to see singer Mark Morrison and mayor Sir Peter Soulsby meeting to discuss Mr Morrison’s project to open a recording studio to act a creative hub for young people (Leicester Mercury, September 18, above). I wish them both well in this endeavour as it will be a credit to all involved.

However, the picture which accompanied the article has raised my concern as it shows our mayor standing behind Mr Morrison while not wearing a face covering.

I have no doubt the mayor was a minimum of two metres away from Mr Morrison, but as the picture was taken indoors, surely he should have worn a face covering?

the government’s advice – see Gov.uk “face coverings when to wear one” – clearly states: “You should also wear a face covering in indoor places where social distancing may be difficult and where you will come into contact with people you do not normally meet.”

It may be myself and not the mayor who has misinterpreted the above guidance, but even so, I would ask why, given that Leicester continues to be in special measures, did he not consider this an opportunity to wear a face covering, to remind his constituents of the importance of them?

I may be mistaken in this, but I do not once recall seeing a picture of our mayor wearing a face covering at any time since this pandemic began.

Surely there must have been many opportunities for our usually publicity-hungry mayor to have been photographed leading by example?

It appears to be yet another example of our council leaders using the maxim, “do as we say not as we do”.

As we contemplate a potential

second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, why do we have to demand again that our politicians stand up, stand tall and stand out in promoting continued awareness?
