Jump in cases in city and county
A TOTAL of 245 new coronavirus cases have been confirmed across Leicester and Leicestershire.
The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has updated the daily number of new positive tests for coronavirus.
A total of 98 cases were added to Leicester’s cumulative total, meaning there have now been 7,858 cases of coronavirus identified in the city since the beginning of the pandemic.
Leicester remains under local lockdown rules that prohibit mixing between households in homes and gardens.
More than 100 new coronavirus cases were added to just the city’s totals on Friday, another 181 cases were added to county rolling tolls.
The DHSC also said three were 65 new cases in Charnwood, and 32 in Blaby.
There were 19 new cases in Oadby and Wigston borough, which is also in lockdown, and 14 in Harborough.
There were 16 new infections confirmed in Hinckley and Bosworth, just three in Melton and 15 in North West Leicestershire.
The rate of infections has been rising in many parts of the country - particularly in the north of England and the Midlands, however, the numbers of patients admitted to hospital with Covid-19 remain much lower than they were in the April peak of the virus.
Public health bosses have warned hospital admissions are likely to rise if infection rates continue to at the rate they have been and that then would be followed by more deaths of infected people.
A new three-tiered system of coronavirus restrictions will be outlined by Boris Johnson today as stringent measures are expected to cause pubs and restaurants to shut across the north of England.
Mr Johnson will reveal the full details of the much-anticipated approach in a statement to the House of Commons.
