Lorry fire results in delays on motorway
A LORRY fire on the M1 caused queues up to eight miles long yesterday.
Fire crews were called to the southbound carriageway near Leicester Forest East Services just after 6am. The fire was still burning an hour later.
The motorway was for a while closed in both directions between Junction 22 at Markfield and Junction 21 at Fosse Park.
The A46 and M69 were congested on the approach to the M1 and Leicester’s outer ring road was badly affected, particularly along New Parks Way and the northbound Lubbesthorpe Way.
By noon, two lanes southbound had reopened, but Highways England said staff were still repairing damage to lanes one and two.
Half an hour later, delays were reported to be about an hour.
