A matter of life and death

- Channel 4, 6.30pm

FANS of Hollyoaks cannot have missed the dramatic build-up to the soap’s 25th anniversary celebrations, which has promised the return of familiar faces, a sinister storyline and of course, some major peril.

Tonight’s birthday episode begins with a motorbike roaring into the village.

Meanwhile, a heartbroken Tony, played by Hollyoaks veteran Nick Pickard, finds a suit hanging up outside the caravan with a note from his mystery admirer saying ‘wear me’. Will he go on the date?

The mysterious biker stalks across the village and into The Hutch, where Tony turns as the man takes off his helmet. It’s his old, er, dead friend Kurt Benson, played by Jeremy Edwards. Kurt is obviously very much alive. So was it that died in the jet ski accident?

In other scary news, the McQueens have got until noon to figure out who is blackmailing them, while a creepy doll watches over them. The doll demands money, or their criminal sins will be revealed. The family will have to scrabble to protect each other’s secrets, but unsurprisingly, Mercedes ( Jennifer Metcalfe) has zero interest in playing ball.

For some nostalgia, tune in tomorrow night to watch a re-run of the soap’s first episode, broadcast back in 1995, with just seven major characters.
