PLAYER RATINGS

- KASPER SCHMEICHEL:

Spread himself to make a great stop early on and save City from falling behind, but was spared embarrassment when a woeful kick-out wasn’t punished. 6/10

TIMOTHY CASTAGNE:

Stretched his legs in the second half as City’s football became free-flowing, the Belgian proving a threat down the right. 7/10

WESLEY FOFANA: For a teenager, he makes the game look alarmingly simple. Shrugged off Zorya attackers who closed him down and carried the ball out of defence with composure. Almost grabbed himself a goal too. 8/10

JONNY EVANS: He may have been overshadowed by his centre-back partner again, but Evans was strong in his defensive work and calm on the ball. Showed his leadership skills with his constant talking. 7/10

CHRISTIAN FUCHS:

Looked a little slow to start, but showed the vision and passing ability he has to contribute to Barnes’ goal. Did not get forward as often as Castagne, and when he did, his crosses didn’t often find a City shirt. 6/10

PAPY MENDY: Another fine showing from the French midfielder, who is unfazed no matter the situation. With plenty of talented ballplayers around him, he didn’t need to be too expansive on the ball, so he kept it simple. 7/10

YOURI TIELEMANS: Not everything came off for him early on, but as the game developed and City gripped control, he showed the intelligence of his passing, playing passes into space and into dangerous areas. 7/10

DENNIS PRAET: Looked rusty on the ball early on, but his tenacity off the ball led to the vital first goal. His play improved in the second period and he was involved in lots of City’s fine moves. 7/10

JAMES MADDISON: Playing in the number 10 role, Maddison was as close to his best as he has been this season. His touch, turns, and feints on the edge of the area opened up space while his awareness helped him poke home the opener. 8/10

HARVEY BARNES: Electric. Used his speed to torment the Zorya back-line time and time again, and showed superb dribbling ability and composure for his goal. He is hard to stop in this sort of form. 8/10

KELECHI IHEANACHO: His passes were sloppy in the opening 10 minutes, but he kept his head, flicking cleverly into Barnes’ path for the second, and showing a sharp turn and finish for the third. Held up the ball excellently. 8/10

SUBSTITUTES

CENGIZ UNDER: Lively cameo from the Turk, lots of nice touches. 6/10

HAMZA CHOUDHURY: Put in a couple of big tackles. 5/10

WES MORGAN: Barely touched the ball in his 10 minutes on the pitch.

JAMES JUSTIN: Made a couple of sprints down the right and got stuck in.
