Shootout with Gunners set to feature Vardy

JAMIE Vardy is expected to make his return from injury at Arsenal.

Because of a calf problem, the Leicester City striker has missed the past two fixtures, the 1-0 loss to Aston Villa and Thursday’s Europa League win over Zorya Luhansk, but is back in training and pushing to be fit for tomorrow night’s clash at the Emirates Stadium.

He will hope to continue his fine record against the Gunners, which currently stands at 10 goals in 11 games.

Speaking on Thursday night, City manager Brendan Rodgers said about his number nine: “We’re thinking that he will be available, but we just need to confirm that over the next couple of days.

“He’s responded really well to treatment and he’s been out on the grass, so we just need to see how he is.

“He’ll join in training and we’ll assess it over the next couple of days.”

If Vardy, right, is not fit to feature, Kelechi Iheanacho will likely be tasked with leading the line.

The Nigerian scored his first goal of the campaign on Thursday night, having set up the first two goals in the 3-0 victory.

Despite Vardy’s exceptional record, Iheanacho does not feel too heavily burdened in taking his place. “To be fair there is no pressure on my side,” said Iheanacho. “Jamie is a top striker, everybody knows and we miss him in the team. “If he is not there, I have got the responsibility, so I just need to be calm and help my team get the result we need.” Rodgers was pleased with the Nigerian’s showing on Thursday. “He gives everything, Kelechi,” he said. “He’s a great player for our squad. You see when he comes into the game, he gives his all. He could have been a bit more precise with one or two passes, but he doesn’t get disappointed. “He keeps going, and his finish was fantastic. “He’s under pressure, spins out of it and shoots off his right foot. He gave everything to the game.”
