A TOWN centre road flooded after a mains pipe burst, sending a torrent of water running down the street.

Police closed Sherrard Street, in Melton, from the junction with Sage Cross Street, after the force of the water washed away parts of the surface and popped up flagstones.

A spokesman said: “Sherrard Street is closed due to a major water leak.

“Severn Trent is working on the water leak as fast as it can but the road is likely to be closed for several days. Please find an alternative route.”

A resident said: “Stay away from the centre of town if you can as a pipe has burst in the road and has flooded everywhere.”

A Severn Trent spokeswoman said the firm had sent a team to deal with the problem.

“We are aware of a leak in Melton town centre,” she said.

“We’re really sorry for any disruption caused by the burst pipe in Sherrard Street this morning.

“Our teams are on site and the burst is not currently affecting anyone’s water supply.

“To keep everyone safe, we will be using traffic management so we can safely dig down and start repairing the pipe.

“Again, we’re sorry for the inconvenience but it will be our absolute priority to get everything fixed and back to normal as quickly as possible.”

A fire service spokeswoman said: “We were called by the police at 7.28am to assist with a burst water main in Sherrard Street.

“One appliance from Melton went and checked for gas leaks with a monitor but there were no leaks.

“The water had been isolated. Severn Trent was on the scene.”
