Bizarre theft of Buddha statue’s head

-

A STRONG-armed thief has stolen the head from a 3ft-high stone statue of Buddha.

The head of the statue of the founder of the Buddhist religion was taken from a garden in Enderby on Sunday night.

Owner Lara Evans is upset about the theft. “We bought that statue about 20 years ago and it was expensive and has been with us through three house moves,” she said.

“It has massive sentimental value to us as a family and I can’t understand who would do such a thing.

“What would anyone do with just the head of a Buddha statue? It’s a bit bizarre.

“It must have taken some breaking off. Whoever stole it must be strong because it weighs a ton.

“It takes two or three men to carry the statue so the head must be quite heavy too.”

Lara said she discovered the theft as she took her son to school on Monday morning. “We were in the car and got to the top of the drive and I noticed that the statue’s head was missing,” she said. “Myself and my son were both upset at this.

“When I got back from school I searched all in the garden but it was nowhere to be seen.

“I looked up and down the road and in the bushes nearby but found nothing.”

Lara hopes to get the head back but in the meantime has replaced it with a Buddha head she had in the back garden. “It looks better than not having a head,” she said.

“It’s not a perfect match but we glued it on.

“We are big Leicester City fans so I decided to put a scarf around Buddha’s neck.

“It hides the join and allows us to shout about our team being top of the Premier League.

“The new head is only a substitute and we would love it if we could get the original head back somehow.”
