A CHURCH is to receive £25,000 of funding from the government’s £1.57 billion Culture Recovery Fund.

St Margaret’s, in Leicester, is one of 20 recipients in the East Midlands, which will share a total of about £2 million.

One of the oldest and largest churches in Leicester, the £25,000 “will pay for comprehensive repairs, allowing people to enter and use its much-valued surrounding green space again”.

Other recipients of grants have included Taylor’s Bellfoundry in Loughborough, which will receive £449,918 for urgent repairs that will help ensure that manufacturing can continue.

St Thomas Church, in Catthorpe, will receive £24,800.

Culture Secretary, Oliver Dowden, said: “These grants will help the places that have shaped our skylines for hundreds of years and that continue to define culture in our towns and cities.

“From St Paul’s and Ronnie Scott’s to The Lowry and Durham Cathedral, we’re protecting heritage and culture to save jobs and ensure it can bounce back strongly.”
