A BUILDING on the University of Leicester campus has been closed “until further notice” after a suspected water leak caused extensive flooding.

The incident happened on Thursday morning at the Bennett Building, off University Road, Leicester, which is predominantly used by the university’s geography faculty.

A crew from Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service’s Southern Station, just around the corner from the campus, in Lancaster Road, attended the incident.

It is believed the issue occurred in the roof of the large, three-storey building - built in the early 1960s - leading to several inches of water pooling in the basement.

The university’s management took to social media to alert students and staff - many of whom are taking part in lectures and tutorials online at present due to the second national coronavirus lockdown in any case.

A spokesperson said: “A significant water flood within the Bennett Building and car park was discovered. The building is now closed until further notice.”

They added: “All teaching and practical sessions will be rescheduled and we are working hard to manage and resolve the situation.

“Further updates will be provided on staff/student announcements.” A fire service spokesman said: “A crew from out Southern fire station did attend to help out and make sure the building was safe.

“Initial reports said there was several feet of water in the basement of the building, however, on arrival it was found to be inches, not feet.

“But the flooding was quire extensive.”

He added: “A second crew from Coalville was requested as they have specialist equipment in the form of a sump pump to help clear the basement of water.

“We believe the leak happened in the roof area and was not due to rainfall but the exact cause is still under investigation.”

A spokeswoman for the University of Leicester said: “We are aware of a significant water flood within the Bennett Building and car park on campus.

“The premises have been checked over by fire and rescue services but the building is now closed until further notice while teams assess any damage and repairs.”

She added: “Staff and students who use the building have been notified, and all teaching and practical sessions will be rescheduled.

“The cause is still yet to be determined. The university will be providing updates as and when they are available.”
